On 1st October 2020, the Buxton Crescent hotel opened its doors following an extensive refurbishment of one of England’s most significant Georgian architectural buildings. This is the first UK property from the Ensana Hotels brand, which is a custodian of European thermal spas utilising powerful natural resources. The hotel opening will revive the wellness traditions of this historic Spa town.

Thanks to The Fifth Duke of Devonshire, who developed the town with grand architecture, the 19th century was a golden age for Buxton when ‘taking the waters’ was a fashionable pastime for notable high-society visitors. Now, guests can experience the therapeutic qualities of the water for themselves as water wellness is at the forefront of Buxton Crescent’s spa offering. The hotel is home to three pools – the Thermal Pool which is a fully refurbished Victorian pool boasting the unique feature of having Buxton mineral rich water flowing into it, which is heated and left chemically untreated; a relaxation pool with an atmospheric dark ceiling pierced with shafts of light and an impressive indoor-outdoor rooftop pool. Lopud 1483 is located on the northern tip of Lopud, Dubrovnik, in a Franciscan monastery that has been overlooking the island for centuries. The property has been lovingly restored over the past 20 years by Creative Director Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza and her family. She worked with the Arhitektri studio in Zagreb to ensure that every aspect was carefully designed in order to preserve the incredible history of the building. Lopud 1483 is available on an exclusive use basis from May to October. The 13 original cells of the 5,000 square meter monastery have been transformed into five exquisite suites, with wooden ceilings, windows and floors and views onto the sea or medicinal garden. Each room features a unique combination of renaissance furniture, from the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection as well as bespoke new pieces by Italian designer Paola Lenti and contemporary art from the TBA21 collection. Intimate meals can be enjoyed outside or in the Old Kitchen – a charming space with an open fire and functional bread oven, used to make delicious fresh pizzas today, while guests can indulge with cocktails and canapes on the Sunset Terrace, located on the top of the fortress, offering exceptional views of Lopud and The Elaphiti Islands. Wellness offerings include locally inspired spa treatments, Alchemy Bars, in-house meditation experts and visiting practitioners can be arranged upon request. This undiscovered island sanctuary has been designed as a place where history, art and botanical exploration ignite the senses. The property is also home to a Sacred Garden, complete with nine stations designed for meditation and contemplation, a traditional Franciscan Pharmacy.

Hotel Union Øye, a member of Relais & Châteaux, has stood at the edge of the Norangsfjord since 1891. Framed by the jagged peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, the timbered hotel has, for more than a century, drawn mountaineers, artists and royalty to this remote stretch of western Norway. Its guestbook reads like a chapter of polar and literary history, with figures such as Roald Amundsen and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle among those who passed through its doors.

Today, the hotel retains its sense of heritage while offering direct access to one of Norway’s most dramatic natural settings. From the jetty, guests can set out on fjord cruises that navigate narrow inlets and sheer cliff faces, or paddle across still waters by kayak. At the innermost edge of Norangsfjorden, a short distance from the hotel, a fjordside sauna offers a traditional Nordic ritual: heat, cold water and open air.
