Buxton Crescent - UK

Buxton Crescent

UK & Europe

On 1st October 2020, the Buxton Crescent hotel opened its doors following an extensive refurbishment of one of England’s most significant Georgian architectural buildings. This is the first UK property from the Ensana Hotels brand, which is a custodian of European thermal spas utilising powerful natural resources. The hotel opening will revive the wellness traditions of this historic Spa town.

Thanks to The Fifth Duke of Devonshire, who developed the town with grand architecture, the 19th century was a golden age for Buxton when ‘taking the waters’ was a fashionable pastime for notable high-society visitors. Now, guests can experience the therapeutic qualities of the water for themselves as water wellness is at the forefront of Buxton Crescent’s spa offering. The hotel is home to three pools – the Thermal Pool which is a fully refurbished Victorian pool boasting the unique feature of having Buxton mineral rich water flowing into it, which is heated and left chemically untreated; a relaxation pool with an atmospheric dark ceiling pierced with shafts of light and an impressive indoor-outdoor rooftop pool. Signature spa treatments include the Thermal Mud Pack using mineral rich mud sourced from Heviz in Hungary and the Co2 Infusion Mineral Bath. The spa is home to eight treatment rooms, one of which has been custom built for dual treatments. A number of the treatment rooms feature original stained-glass windows.

High up on the edge of The Peak District National Park, Buxton is a gateway to this area of outstanding natural beauty, contrasting rolling farmland, forests and deep valleys with high stony plateaus. The hotel is putting Buxton, a place with a thriving cultural scene, incredible architecture and a hidden historical gem of the UK, firmly back onto the tourist map. The property comprises 81 rooms and suites. Following a multi-million-pound renovation and thanks to significant support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other stakeholders, it blends the outstanding history of the 18th century exterior and features reminiscent of this era, such as chandeliers, painted ceilings and stained-glass windows complimented with stylish furniture and modern comforts. The rooms are steeped in more than 200 years history, with some of the suites boasting four-poster beds, freestanding baths and views through wooden sash windows over the slate roofs of the historic town.

Launched in 2019, Ensana is the leading health spa brand in Europe. The group currently manages 26 spa hotels across Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and the UK and has a wide collection of spa hotels located in Europe’s most historic spa towns – renowned for their natural healing resources and restorative properties. Ensana has developed a unique innovative integrative health concept, which combines healing natural resources with medical expertise and modern diagnostic methods, to help guests achieve their personal health goals. The group is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all its guests by providing a diverse range of spas to suit every budget.

The crayfish come from the Moulde river, which winds through the 1,000 hectares of woodland and ponds at the Domaine; the fruit comes from the farm, the vegetables from the kitchen garden. Everything is in tune with the seasons and what the earth is willing to offer. The Domaine is located in Massignac in the area of Charente, close to Cognac and the porcelain capital of Limoges.  The area is famous as a lake region with rich flora and fauna and nature is at the very core of Domaine des Etangs. Cognac is situated on the river Charente, on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The town gives its name to one of the world’s best-known types of Brandy – a unique spirit in that it is double-distilled. This process can be viewed in one of the many “Grande Marque” Cognac houses which all have visitor centres. Most central in the town are Hennessy, Martell, Otard, Camus and Remy Martin. Palácio Tangará

South America

Built originally as Tangará Ranch in the surroundings of the highly regarded Burle Marx Park, some of Brazil’s finest, leading creative talents were commissioned for the original project: iconic architect, Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle Marx himself, to landscape the gardens. Nearly 20 years later, Oetker Collection completed the romantic monument. This was the prestigious Collection’s first foray into the Americas surrounded by São Paulo’s thriving contemporary art scene, itself a microcosm of the exciting Brazilian art world. The hotel comprises 141 spacious guestrooms – including 59 suites – all with beautiful views overlooking the park. The interior design was entrusted to leading Brazilian interior designers William Simonato, Luis Bick and Patricia Anastassiadis, who created a truly bespoke design concept for each space. Acclaimed Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten drives the hotel’s dining experiences with zesty, innovative cuisine, and there is a signature restaurant, Chef’s table, a bar, a wine cellar, a lobby and lounge bar, all with outdoor terraces. Tangará Jean-Georges received its first Michelin star in 2018. The fitness centre and Flora Spa by Sisley offer something quite remarkable for São Paulo, and feature a private Spa Garden, indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

Set over 1,000 hectares of protected nature-filled countryside comprising forest, grassland and lakes, Domaine des Etangs is a converted private home that has been recently transformed into a unique hotel.  At the heart of the property lies a fully renovated 13th century château, interior designed by Isabelle Stanislas – designer to to the French president Emmanuel Macron. Numerous pieces of contemporary art fill the property from Matisse to Picasso.  The chateau is surrounded by landscaped gardens and lakes, filled with art installations and sculptures including those by Richard Long and Irina Rasquinet. There are six farmhouse cottages, a longère, a vegetable garden, Gallo-Roman baths, two swimming pools, a floating tennis court and a gastronomic restaurant plus fumoir. There is also an art gallery featuring works by Herman de Vries, Sheila Hicks Michael, Yves Klein Yayoi, Giuseppe Penone and Hiroshi Sugimoto Lee. The expert spa, Moulin des Etangs is located in a converted water mill which is still in use today. Dining is completely bespoke for each guest and experiences range from private woodland picnics complete with blankets, scattered lanterns and a fire pit, romantic candlelight-dinners in the heart of a wine cellar brimming with vintage bottles or supper in the gastronomic restaurant Dyades. The team works with local producers to reduce the journey from earth to table, exploring the rich terroir of the Limousin region. Bordeaux and its surrounding vineyards are just a 1.5 hour drive away.
