Nihi Sumba Island is a breathtaking, secluded retreat on Sumba, one of the 17,000 islands in the Indonesia Archipelago.

May 17thINDONESIA

With remarkable views across the Indian Ocean, this exceptional property is built around the stunning Savour tropical jungles, an ancient tribal culture, and pristine beaches, clearly defining Nihi Sumba as a luxurious destination of serenity, nature and complete relaxation. From May 5 to June 17 2018, take a dive into a world where meditation and extreme adventure merge as Nihi Sumba joins forces with Augusto Vegas, the renowned freediver and founder of Survial Apnea, to offer exclusive freediving courses to guests. Born and raised in Peru, Augusto’s curiosity for spearfishing, surfing and freediving quickly became his livelihood. After significant training, he soon became an Apnea Total Freediving Instructor, a SSI Freediving Instructor and a Wildfitness Head Coach. Augusto mainly attributes his success to surfing, for which he holds two Billabong XXL BIG Wave championships that provided him with the essential skills for an exhilarating career in freediving. During the 6-hour course at Nihi Sumba (split into three two-hour lessons), Augusto will guide participants through the theory behind freediving, focusing both on the physical preparation and the importance of spiritual mindfulness—explicitly teaching the physiology and psychology behind the technique. The course is taught on a one-on-one basis, with beginners discovering theory, breath-holding techniques, and muscle relaxation exercises poolside before heading to the open water for practical sessions. In addition, the importance of yoga is incorporated into the practice, as meditation and fluidity is essential to a wholesome experience. Once guests are comfortable staying underwater at significant depths (10m+), they are encouraged to start exploring the wildlife of the ocean, including an array of South East Asian reef fauna: surgeon fish, parrot fish, groupers, trivially, turtles and eels as well as open ocean species such as rainbow runners and mahi-mahi. With consistency of both the physical training, and meditation practices, the results are astonishing. When beginners start, trainees can usually hold their breath for around 45 seconds; on completion of the course, participants reach up to three minutes and are ready to go on a 20-metre ocean dive. In addition to physiological benefits, guests will be treated to unrivalled marine environments as well as unspoilt tranquility on the remote island of Sumba.

HOW: Nihi Sumba Island offers the six hour Free-Diving Course from US$400, including Free Diving Certification. Price excludes boat hire fee of US$250 for two hours, including guide, F&B and equipment. Minimum age to take part is 16 years.
