Hotel Esencia and designer Jason Wu have collaborated to launch an exclusive capsule clothing collection available now.  Inspired by the designer’s love of the iconic boutique hotel, the ‘Jason Wu x Hotel Esencia’ collection will be carried by major retailers in the USA including Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, globally on Net-a-Porter and in select specialty stores, as well as in Hotel Esencia’s own chic boutique, Retrobottega.

Wu’s cotton capsule collection features beautiful feminine florals and stripes inspired by the resort’s natural, yet refined aesthetic.  There are 11 styles in the collection that make use of both printed and solid cotton and silk for tops, skirts and dresses.  A special ‘birds of paradise’ print was also derived from Hotel Esencia’s colourful scenery to depict the property’s bountiful greenery and flora.  Stripes too were taken from the hotel’s signature use of bold primary block colouring, reflecting both Jason Wu and Hotel Esencia owner, Kevin Wendle’s fondness for mid-century furnishings and graphics that can be seen throughout the hotel.  The pieces have been designed to be versatile and ‘seasonless’, with an almost all-cotton fabric palette that is perfect for both city and beach.

Originally built as the private hideaway home of an Italian duchess on what is considered the most beautiful stretch of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Hotel Esencia is today one of the finest luxury boutique properties on the Riviera Maya.  In 2014, it began a new journey when award-winning entrepreneur and art collector, Kevin Wendle became owner.  Jason Wu has long been a fan of Hotel Esencia, even marrying at the property in 2016 at which time the ‘chic set’ flocked to Xpu Ha (pronounced ‘shpooo-ha’ by those in the know) for the nuptials – widely considered to be the most beautiful and one of the most protected, untouched white sand beaches in Mexico.

Hotel Esencia is home to a handpicked compilation of art and antiques, making its décor so unique.  With Wendle’s desire to reimagine the property came an entire collection of furniture designed especially for the hotel in addition to hand-woven rugs, bed throws and table tops which pay homage to mid-century Mexican and European art and design and from which Jason Wu drew inspiration.  Artwork by celebrated Spanish and Latin American artists decorate the walls including works by Pablo Picasso, Fernando Botero and Eduardo Santiere. There are Pierre Jeanneret chairs in the main sitting room along with lamps by Serge Mouille and Pierre Guariche, all perfectly befitting of the idyllic backdrop of lush palms and cerulean skies.

Enhancing the much-loved Mexican bolthole’s reputation as the chicest, coolest luxury boutique hotel on the Riviera Maya, of the partnership, Jason Wu comments: Hotel Esencia is truly the perfect escape for me.  My dear friend Kevin Wendle has created this wonderfully chic destination with the most incredible scenery and collection of mid-century furniture. I am constantly inspired when I am there and it is very exciting to collaborate with one of my favorite places on earth!”

Hotel Esencia owner, Kevin Wendle, comments: “How lucky for us that Jason Wu had a vision for this during one of his recent holidays here?  Now that we have seen what he has created, we can’t imagine anyone else designing something so beautifully in harmony with Hotel Esencia and so appealing to the sophisticated ladies who grace our resort.”

Prices for the ‘Jason Wu x Hotel Esencia’ collection range from $595 for a short sleeve cotton and silk stripe sweater, up to $1,295 for dresses.  Located just 50 minutes from Cancun and 30 from Tulum, Hotel Esencia is full of character, charm and heritage. Rates start from $615++ per night, room only.
