September 16thCYPRUS

Everyone knows that food is a real highlight in the Med and Cyprus is no exception. As of this autumn, Almyra is offering guests a three-day foodie-focused autumnal escape. Staying at Almyra, which offers a laidback and elegant take on Mediterranean luxury, guests can visit family-owned Vouini Panyia Winery, join local fisherman on a fishing adventure, learn how to make halloumi and enjoy a cooking class with Almyra’s chef. Vouini Panyia Winery is a 25-hectare vineyard, which sits 1,000 above sea level, surrounded by pine forests. Here, guests can embark on a private tour of the vineyard to learn how the grapes are harvested and the wine is produced, followed by a tasting of the local wines. With its sea-surrounding location, it is no surprise that fresh fish is a key part of Cypriot cuisine. The experience will also include a 1.5-hour fishing trip, where guests can witness first-hand how the fisherman go about catching the fresh fish of the day, as well as having the opportunity to cast the nets themselves.  After working up an appetite, participants can head back to shore, where Almyra’s Head Chef will teach foodies how to make local dishes that can be created back home.  A trip to Cyprus would not be complete without learning about the origins of halloumi. After a scenic journey through the mountainous terrain, guests will arrive at the picturesque village of Galataria. Here, visit Katsouras, a family-owned rural factory which specialises in promoting local Cypriot produce through using generation-old techniques. In addition to the much-loved halloumi, local delicacies also include Anari, Trachana and Easter Cheese; Stafida raisins; Epsima concentrated grape juice and a delicious sweet treat called Sioutzioukos. After busy days sampling local delicacies, make use of the wonderful facilities back at the hotel.  Cyprus is one of the warmest places in Europe in autumn, meaning travellers can laze away on poolside sundecks and swim in Almyra’s swimming pools.

HOW: Three-night Discover the Culinary Delights of Cyprus from €417 (currently approx. £385) per person based on two sharing a Superior View on a B&B basis plus activities and meals as listed in the package. www.almyra.com
